What is LTE?

LTE, also known as “Long-Term Evolution”, is defined as a wireless broadband standard for mobile communication and data transfers, built as part of the development toward 4G.

What is Fixed LTE-A?

As above but this solution was developed to transmit data between a router and a specific cell tower, usually closest to the router. It therefore offers a wireless high-speed internet connection designed to work from a set location, like your office or home. Fixed LTE is often the best alternative when high-speed internet access is required in areas where other types of internet solutions, like fibre, is not available. Fixed LTE is also often preferred as a temporary solution or failover option.

What speeds can I expect from Fixed LTE-A?

Like all mobile services it is a best effort service and covers the entire range between 3G’s average 3 Mbps to 4G’s 100 Mbps, giving it a massive range of potential speeds. Speeds are mostly influenced by the distance from the nearest tower and the congestion at the tower. On average, however, download speeds range from 10-60 Mbps, with faster speeds often available in urban areas.

Does loadshedding impact Fixed LTE-A speeds?

Yes, loadshedding is placing strain on the availability of mobile networks. Intermittent service interruptions and occasional degradation of the signal strength has a negative effect on speeds and customer experience.

Advantages of Fixed LTE-A

  • Often available in areas where fixed broadband connections like fibre are not available.
  • Quick installation, available almost immediately.
  • Perfect for rural and remote areas.
  • Fixed LTE routers are portable, which means you can take them with you when you travel – depending on the conditions of the specific mobile operator.
  • There are no installation costs.
  • Various affordable options available.
